Infertility can be a major cause of concern for couples looking forward to conceiving a child. Infertility can be caused due to a many factors including age related, lifestyle habits, ovulation problems, sperm related issues and even tubal causes. However, just like there is a cure  for other medical conditions, there are several infertility treatments a couple can opt for to boost the chances of their pregnancy.

In vitro fertilization: This is one of the common fertility treatments opted by most couples in India. When other treatments fail, couples in India are rapidly resorting for IVF treatments that help in improving the chances of pregnancy. IVF combines sperms and eggs in a laboratory. The fertilized egg or embryo is placed inside the female uterus with the help of a small tube. The process involves usage of fertility drugs and hormone injections that are given to the female partner before the surgical procedure is carried out. The success of this procedure depends on the health care provider, age of the female and also her health. The average cost of an IVF cycle can be anywhere between Rs.  50,000-2 lakhs.

Surrogacy: This method involves appointment of a surrogate mother who carries the child on the behalf of the mother. The egg of the surrogate mother is not used in the process and therefore she is known as the birth mother and not a biological mother. In India, many Bollywood celebrities like Shahrukh Khan, Ekta Kapoor, Sunny Leone and others have become parents through surrogacy.

Zygote intrafallopian transfer: Commonly known as ZIFT, this process involves placing a fertilized egg inside the fallopian tube of the mother by the use of laparoscopy. This treatment is commonly used when a blockage in the fallopian tube prevents the female partner from getting pregnant.

IUI with sperm donor: IUI stands for intrauterine insemination, commonly known as alternative insemination or donor insemination. This is a simple and low-tech procedure that involves putting the sperm directly into the uterus at the time of ovulation. The process involves collecting the semen samples from your partner or the donor and putting it through ‘sperm washing’ process that helps in collecting healthy sperms from the semen.

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection: In case of male fertility, this method is commonly used. This is an IVF procedure in which a single sperm is directly injected into the ovum to boost pregnancy. The cost of this treatment may vary from clinic to clinic and may go upto Rs. 4-7 lakhs.

Surgery: Women suffering from blocked fallopian tubes, fibroids or any other genetic disorder usually opt for surgery to increase the chances of pregnancy. The cost of the surgery may vary from clinic to clinic.

Donor embryo or eggs: This artificial fertilization process involves using donated eggs or sperm. This is a laboratory based procedure involving finding a suitable donor, undergoing several tests, taking medications and then the fertilization process.

Fertility drugs: Consuming fertility drugs leads to regulation of hormones that help in improving the chances of conception. Regular dosage of medicines helps in releasing one or two eggs at the time of ovulation.
